Possible Extreme Surface Mount Workshop?

Tiny Parts!

Working with tiny Surface Mount parts is challenging but can be done in the comfort of your own home. With a bit of effort, and a lot of experimentation, I've figured out one way to do this successfully. You can check out my process here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Extreme_Surface_Mount_Soldering/

Since this process uses ATtiny2313 to control the hotplate and uses Eagle to create the circuit boards, it seems to dovetail nicely with Dorkbot interests. Now that Laen is leading the way in fabricating circuit boards and Don is teaching the use of Eagle, there's no reason we shouldn't be using surface mount technology. The workshop could include topics from my Instructable such as surface mount board design; surface mount soldering using solder paste, a stencil, and a hotplate; and related topics.

Would fellow Dorkbots be interested in such a seminar?

That would be awesome. I want to try reflow for the first time, and a workshop would be awesome.

Toaster Oven Reflow?

As I'm sure many others have done, I built a reflow oven from a toaster oven (I used Silicon Horizon's controller). What others may be interested in is the insulation I used; my wife works for a refractory company, and I got some great industrial grade fireproof insulation from them. It comes in two forms; a flat, semi-rigid paper-like form that's about 1/4" thick, and a 1" thick fluffy kind. Not asbestos, but probably something you wouldn't want to breathe, either. If anyone's interested I could bring samples to the meeting. Cost is about $4 per square foot, and it works great; I can have the oven at 235 C, and the top is barely warm. I was also able to fit the electronics inside the case without overheating them. The only obvious modification is the usb and power port on the side.

Schedule it so we can promote it.

I just spoke to some PSU Seniors who would be very interested in this. The right place to put this would be soon where we could use the design/fab class to promote it. Unfortunately the PD followup is scheduled for mid january. Maybe we could do it during or instead of the open lab at the end of december.

Instead of the open lab

Given the poor turnout in the open labs lately, I'd say we do this instead of the open lab, if that date works well for Jim.

You need to write this up.

It should be sticky at the top of the dorkbotpdx pages.

Yep.

Working on it now..
